LEQUTA WELLER
My Story
I grew up in Dallas as the oldest of three children. My dad was a “Jack of all Trades”, and my mom was an LPN. My parents worked very hard to make us kids feel safe and secure. We had very little money, but never felt like we were deprived by any means. My dad would always say “my kids will not be a statistic”. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me because I was introduced to sex, drugs, and alcohol at a very young age. Being sexually abused by a family member and hanging out with the wrong crowd, my destiny seemed inevitable. I moved out of the house when I was 15 years old and rented a place with my best friend. At the age of 17 my dad passed away unexpectedly. It devastated my mom who felt she needed to move to Washington State to be close to my dad’s family. When my mom left, she took my brother with her, and I was left to take care of my little sister. When I realized my current job wasn’t sufficient to meet our needs, I did what I knew best; hit the streets and there I was introduced to making quick money by using my body. My whole focus was taking care of my sister and making sure she never followed in my footsteps. I knew what I was doing was wrong so one night as I was trying to figure a way out of our situation suddenly this thought came to my mind and said, “enough is enough, time to reach out to your mom and find a way to get to Washington”. That next morning, I took my sister to school and started working on a plan to get plane tickets because when I called my mom, she was unable to come up with the money for us. Thank God, we finally made it to Washington after being on our own for a year and a half.
At 18 ½ I met an amazing man (Isaac) who became my boyfriend and later he became my husband. The road from meeting to marriage was a rocky one, but if it weren’t for Isaac, I don’t know where I would be today. He introduced me to Jesus and started teaching me the love that God had for me and how He sent His only child, Jesus, to die for all my sins. Isaac accepted me knowing my past and showed me how God forgives it all. Believing in God didn’t come easy for me. It was a long journey to understand my worth and the plans He has for me. I had a lot of questions of why God wasn’t around for me when I needed Him most. I had to learn how His love is unconditional and is always present even when I don’t feel Him. When I gave my heart to Jesus, everything in my life changed in an unimaginable way. My eyes, mind and heart opened in a way that I can’t even describe to you. This is when I found my calling and I knew what Jesus wanted me to do. I knew that everything I had gone through was worth it because I can now share my story. I went to the streets where I knew I was needed to help the homeless, street walkers, etc. and have them benefit from my story. I knew my job was to serve those people by helping them get off the streets or by just being that person they could talk to or to receive food and clothing from. In 2018 I started a Non-profit called “Beloved Outreach” for the purpose of helping those people on the streets. I wanted to help them find their way back to themselves, back to their families and show them that there are people who care about them and want to help them. Every month we would gather a group of volunteers to go out and hit the streets to provide them with prayer, food, and clothing. This is my calling, to help those on the street by spreading the love of Jesus and show them their worth and how to love themselves again or for most it’s the first time they have experienced anything close to that kind of love.
